Obituary for Stefan Ivan Hishynsky

STEFAN I. HISHYNSKY age 95, passed away peacefully at the Thomas C. Perciak Hospice Center, Strongsville, Ohio, in the early morning on Friday, August 21, 2020. Stefan was born on July 7, 1925 and raised in Peremyshlany, Ukraine.
He is survived by his loving children, Lidia, Areta Golembiowsky (Zenovy-deceased), Zenon and Alfia Zgrabik (Joseph); cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Hannah, Aaron and great-granddaughter Olivia; dear half-brothers Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj (Sherry-deceased) of Topeka, KS and Lubon (Daria) Hiszczynskyj of Fort Dodge, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews in the U.S., Canada and a few in Ukraine.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Eugenia (nee Petryna) of 53 years in 2005; father Eustachjy Hiszcznskyj in 1969; mother Kataryna (nee Orlowska) in 1930; step-mother Maria (nee Tuziak) in 2006; brother Antony and half-brother Mirko (Ukraine).
He completed his studies and worked as a law clerk prior to 1944 when his family fled Western Ukraine. He resided in several Displaced Persons Camps in Western Germany and Austria. While in Germany during 1946 he became involved in organized sports and played on the travelling Ukrainian Soccer Club Team “Ukraina”.
He emigrated from Salzburg, Austria to the United States in 1949 to Livermore, Iowa, briefly lived in Philadelphia then settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, and later St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Parma, Ohio, where his children attended school. He worked for Mural & Son for 25 years and retired from Ford Motor in 1990 where he worked as a pipefitter.
During 1950, Stefan played on the Philadelphia Soccer Club Team “Tryzub”. In 1951 while he was a member of The Cleveland Soccer Club Team “Orlyk”, they won the State of Ohio Championship.The team was renamed “Lviv”, and during 1955 in Chicago the team won first place in the Ukrainian Soccer North Regional Champion ship Games of America. Stefan continued to play on the “Lviv” team through 1960.
He volunteered his time to help in the construction of St. Josaphat High School-Astrodome and volunteered his skills as a plumber at the Ukrainian PLAST Scouts Camp “Pysanyj Kamin”, located in Middlefield, Ohio. Stefan was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage and to have become a US citizen in 1957. He was always a devoted husband and loving father to his family. During his last 9 years he resided with his eldest daughter in Strongsville, Ohio.
Funeral Service Saturday, August 29 at St. Josaphat Cathedral at 11 a.m. (PLEASE MEET AT CATHEDRAL). Visitation in Cathedral from 10 a.m. until time of service. Entombment St. Andrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, the Ukrainian Museum Archives or the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA#12).
