Stephen Zenczak

STEPHEN ZENCZAK died on October 7, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene; his daughters Barbara Belovich (Robert), Christine Connor (Bill) and sons Gregory (Mary), Stephen J. (Patricia) and Daniel (deceased) (Olga); his brothers John (Mary) (both deceased), Taras (Nina) and sister Patricia Krutyholowa (Walter-deceased); he leaves 13 granddaughters, one grandson and 11 great-grandchildren. Mr. Zenczak spent 30 years with Brush Wellman, Inc. (Materion, Inc.). He started in 1957 as Sales/Applications Engineer and retired in 1987 as Vice Pres. and General Manager of the Beryllium Division. Stephen was born in the village of Makowisko, county of Jaroslav, Western Ukraine (currently south eastern Poland). He immigrated to the U.S. in 1930 as a four year old, in the company of his mother and older brother. He graduated from West Tech High School (1944) and The Ohio State Univ. (1951) with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He later attended Cleveland Marshall Law School (currently part of Cleveland State Univ.) He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, commissioned 2nd Lt., Corp. of Engineers. During his tenure at Brush Wellman, he worked closely with Aerospace and Defense Contractors in the U.S. and Western Europe in the design and production of “Cold War” weapons programs, such as U.S. Navy Polaris Missile Program, the U.S. Air Force Minute Man Missile Program and the AEC’s nuclear weapons design and production programs at the Livermore, Cal Laboratories and Rocky Flats, Colo. True to his Ukrainian roots, Stephen (or Stefan) was a life long member of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. He was active in the Ukrainian American Community and served on the Boards of The Shevchenko Manor Home, the Ukrainian Museum-Archives and Osnova Credit Union.

Funeral Service Friday, October 12 at St. Andrew Ukrainian Catholic Church, 7700 Hoertz Rd., Parma at 10 a.m. (PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH). Entombment St. Andrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to commemorate his memory may contribute to The Ukrainian Museum-Archives, 1202 Kenilworth Ave., Cleveland, OH 44113.
